The BEST (Benguela Source and Transport) project was designed to investigate the form of the Benguela Current and ratio of the Aguhlhas Current and South Atlantic Current source waters masses. The transport of the Benguela Current and its variability was measured by a moored array of instruments, inverted echo sounders (IES), inverted echo Cited by: 4.

While initial scientific surveys of the Benguela region were all exploratory by nature, and operated from a relatively low information base, they started unveiling the existence of the slow northwest-flowing Benguela Current, upwelling, poleward undercurrent, Agulhas Current, Agulhas rings and their advection, to name but a few (Shannon ).Cited by: 1.

But Benguela is a direct route to the Angolan seaport on the Atlantic Ocean through which Zambian goods could be exported and imported at a cheaper cost than the more distant South African ports.

The project comes at a time when Zambia’s copper production is on the increase following the rise of copper prices on the global market. The overall aim of DLIST-Benguela is to increase access of local communities to information that is critical to environmental management and sustainable livelihood creation, founded on the Benguela Current’s coastal and marine resources.

Already through the pilot, as a tool accessible to a wide range of stakeholders, DLIST is ideally positioned to translate the outputs from.

The Benguela environment is highly variable, prone to large-scale episodic warming events called Benguela Niños, intrusions of warm water from the east or cold water from the south, and changes in winds and salinity. All of these compound the effects of fishing and complicate the task of sustainable resource management.

The third phase of the "Benguela Water" project, set to be complete by the first quarter ofwas launched Wednesday in Luongo village, district of Lobito. As a complement to the BEST program (Benguela Source and Transport; Garzoli et al., ), and to directly measure the northward flow of intermediate water in the southeastern Atlantic, a new experiment, the Benguela Current Experiment, was conducted during.
